INTRODUCTION
Hands play a major role in the transmission of infection in health care institutions, industrial settings such as the food industry and also in all community and domestic settings, the importance of hand hygiene in the control of infection cannot be under emphasized.
There are 2 – 3 million deaths worldwide each year from diarrheal diseases, many which could be prevented. Hands are highway for the transmission and spread of bacteria and viruses that causes food borne illness and nonsocial infection.
Definition
Hand washing is the act of cleaning ones hands
with the use of water or another liquid or with use of soap for the purpose of
removing soil, dirt and micro-organisms. Hand hygiene results in a reduction of
microbial load on hand
IMPORTANCE OF HAND WASHING
- Cleanse the hands off pathogens (including bacteria and viruses) and chemicals which cause personal harm or disease.
- Reduces the incidence of diarrhea by nearly half.
- Good hand hygiene is the first line defence
against spread of many illnesses such as meningitis, bronchiolitis, influenza,
hepatitis A, gastrointestinal infections, flu.
